Pearl Fine Lager Beer 16 Oz Tab Top Can

Pearl's San Antonio Pint-Size Can

The Pearl Fine Lager Beer 16 Oz Tab Top Can represents a major era in Texas brewing history, produced by the Pearl Brewing Company of San Antonio, Texas. Established originally in the late nineteenth century as the San Antonio Brewing Association, Pearl grew to become one of the premier regional brewing powers in the American South, standing out as the only San Antonio brewery to survive Prohibition.

This 16-ounce pint-format container provided consumers with a larger-capacity alternative to standard 12-ounce releases. The can's graphics prominently showcase Pearl's signature branding, including the iconic clamshell crest, bold script lettering, and historic references such as the "XXX" mark—a traditional brewer's symbol denoting high pedigree—alongside slogans such as "The Gem of Fine Beers". The pearl inside an oyster shell motif paid tribute to the original brewmaster’s description of the beer’s sparkling foam.

Among collector circles, notable variations of this 16-ounce issue exist. Differences can be found in the mandatory brewery text, where some cans list only the San Antonio home plant, while other pressings include multiple city locations following Pearl's mid-century corporate expansions and acquisitions across the country. Further production variations appear across can seam constructions, including straight steel and crimped steel bodies, along with subtle shifts in regulatory text placement, typography weight, and crest detailing.

Pearl's historic Broadway brewery complex in San Antonio eventually closed at the beginning of the twenty-first century and was later redeveloped into a celebrated cultural district. Today, this oversized Texas tab-top issue remains an important piece of Lone Star State breweriana, capturing the regional dominance and classic industrial design of San Antonio's flagship brewing house.
