Pearl Fine Lager Beer 16 Oz Tab Top Can

San Antonio's Iconic Pint Can

Produced by the Pearl Brewing Company in San Antonio, Texas, the Pearl Fine Lager Beer 16 Oz Tab Top Can represents a notable era of Texas breweriana. Originally founded in the 1880s as the San Antonio Brewing Association, Pearl grew into one of the largest and most influential regional breweries in the American South, rivaling fellow Lone Star State brewing giants.

Design and Collector Details

The 16-ounce "tallboy" or pint-size format distinguishes this release from the more prevalent 12-ounce iterations. The can's graphics showcase Pearl's signature branding, highlighted by the stylized clamshell emblem, bold script lettering, and slogans such as "The Gem of Fine Beers" along with historic references to "XXX" quality standards—a nod to European brewing traditions denoting craft and high pedigree.

Notable variations of this 16-ounce tab top can exist among collector circles. These differences include variations in mandatory tax and regulatory text, slight alterations in the clamshell crest design, and differing can seam constructions, such as straight steel and crimped steel bodies. Some versions also reflect shifts in brewery ownership and regional distribution, displaying multi-city brewery listings as Pearl acquired other facilities across the United States.

Historical Context

Throughout the mid-to-late 20th century, Pearl expanded its market share substantially across the southwestern United States before eventually being acquired by General Brewing and later integrated under the Pabst Brewing Company umbrella. While the historic San Antonio brewhouse on Broadway closed at the turn of the 21st century and was subsequently repurposed, Pearl breweriana remains highly sought after by collectors specializing in oversized Texas beer containers and tab-top historical issues.
