Pearl Lager Beer Flat Top Can

Pearl Lager Beer Flat Top History

The Pearl Lager Beer flat top can represents a classic chapter in Texas brewing history, produced under the mandatory name of the San Antonio Brewing Association (San Antonio Assn.) in San Antonio, Texas.

The Pearl brand originated in the late 19th century when brewer Otto Koehler helped establish the San Antonio Brewing Association. The name "Pearl" famously derived from the appearance of effervescent bubbles rising in a glass, resembling shimmering pearls. The packaging also frequently incorporated the historic "XXX" marking, a nod to European brewing traditions symbolizing exceptional quality.

For breweriana collectors, this flat top can is a quintessential artifact of Southwestern brewing heritage. The design showcases bold Pearl typography set against classic backgrounds, including subtle metallic and woodgrain patterns. Known variations exist across production runs, with differences in text coloring such as dark red and dark brown lettering, slight revisions to the mandatory brewery text, and differing lid stampings.

Following the repeal of Prohibition, the San Antonio Brewing Association expanded rapidly, establishing Pearl as a dominant regional brand across Texas and the American Southwest. Cans bearing the "San Antonio Assn." mandatory imprint reflect this era prior to the organization formally adopting the Pearl Brewing Company corporate name. Because of its deep regional heritage and distinctive mid-century lithography, this can remains a popular centerpiece for collectors of vintage Texas breweriana.
