Peoples Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Historic Oshkosh Peoples Beer

The Peoples Beer 12 oz tab top can holds an enduring place in Midwestern breweriana and American industrial history. Produced by the Peoples Brewing Company in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the label represents one of the most culturally significant regional breweries of the twentieth century.

Peoples Brewing Company was originally established in the early twentieth century by a collective of local Oshkosh tavern keepers and workers seeking independence from larger regional brewing operations. For decades, Peoples was a staple across the Fox River Valley, recognizable by its clean graphic design, bold company emblem, and the brewery's long-running slogan, "Hits The Spot!"

Beyond its local roots, cans bearing the Oshkosh Peoples imprint represent a landmark chapter in civil rights and African American entrepreneurship. In 1970, activist and former brewery executive Theodore "Ted" Mack Sr., alongside a group of investors under United Black Enterprises, purchased the Peoples Brewing Company. This historic acquisition made Peoples the first Black-owned and operated brewery in the United States. Under Mack's leadership, the brewery sought to foster economic empowerment and minority employment while attempting to expand distribution nationally. Although the brewery ceased operations in 1972, cans produced during this transformative era remain vital historical artifacts.

For breweriana collectors, Peoples Beer tab top cans are highly prized for both their regional heritage and historic provenance. Known variations exist across different manufacturing runs, featuring subtle differences in mandatory text layout, canning seam construction, and lid stampings from packaging manufacturers such as the Continental Can Company.
