Peter Doelger Bock Flat Top Can

Peter Doelger Bock Flat Top

The Peter Doelger Bock flat top can represents one of the most sought-after seasonal releases from the Peter Doelger Brewing Corp. of Harrison, New Jersey. Originating from a prominent New York brewing dynasty established in the nineteenth century, the Doelger operation shifted across the river to Harrison, occupying the historic former Peter Hauck brewing facility following the repeal of Prohibition.

While Peter Doelger distributed its flagship lager and ale in standard flat top cans, the bock was distributed as a seasonal specialty. Because bocks were traditionally brewed and marketed for a limited window in the spring, canning runs for this label were brief compared to the brewery's standard offerings. Consequently, surviving examples of the bock are far scarcer than their regular production counterparts.

Manufactured by the American Can Company with the trademark Keglined inner coating, the can features the classic Peter Doelger brand identity, distinct bock labeling, opening instruction panels, and the mandatory Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statement. Known variations exist across different manufacturing runs, showcasing subtle differences in side-panel layout and text alignment.

Among breweriana enthusiasts, this can gained acclaim through historic discoveries, notably including an assemblage preserved by a traveling American Can Company technician who serviced canning lines across the eastern seaboard. Because of its limited production and deep ties to mid-Atlantic brewing history, the Peter Doelger Bock remains a marquee piece in early canned beer history.
