Peter Hand Reserve Beer Flat Top Can

Peter Hand Reserve Flat Top

Produced by the Peter Hand Brewery Company of Chicago, Illinois, the Peter Hand Reserve Beer flat top can represents a notable chapter in the city's industrial brewing history. Founded in 1891 by Prussian immigrant and American Civil War veteran Peter Hand on Chicago's North Side, the facility grew into a major regional producer and eventually held the distinction of being Chicago's last remaining legacy commercial brewery before shutting down in the late 1970s.

The label design for Peter Hand Reserve reflects classic mid-century graphic styling, centered around bold typography framed by prominent color bands. One of the most recognizable aspects of this can series is the use of scenic pictorial vignettes. Graphic treatments across production runs featured illustrated leisure scenes, such as tavern settings with figures gathered around tables with glassware, as well as outdoor recreation and fishing illustrations.

Enthusiasts document multiple variations across manufacturing batches. Differences between issues include alternate background finishes such as metallic accents compared to enamel silver trims, distinct illustrated vignettes, and subtle revisions to the mandatory brewery legal text.

Beyond this specific can line, the Peter Hand Brewery is historically recognized for developing and popularizing the original low-calorie beer formulation, Meister Brau Lite, which was later acquired by the Miller Brewing Company and rebranded as Miller Lite.
