Peter Hand Reserve Beer Flat Top Can

Peter Hand Reserve Flat Top Can

The Peter Hand Reserve Beer Flat Top Can was produced by the Peter Hand Brewing Company in Chicago, Illinois. Founded in 1891 by Prussian immigrant and Civil War veteran Peter Hand on Chicago's North Side, the brewery grew into a Midwestern powerhouse and ultimately held the distinction of being the city's last remaining legacy commercial brewery when it closed operations in the late 1970s.

The Peter Hand Reserve label is widely recognized for its mid-century graphic design, characterized by bold typography, rich color framing, and scenic illustrated vignettes. Depending on the release, these illustrative panels depicted various leisure and social settings, including tavern scenes with patrons around tables and outdoor recreational motifs such as fishing from boats. The graphics were framed by enamel silver and metallic trim detailing.

Beyond graphic design, cans from the Peter Hand Brewery tie into significant milestones in American brewing history. The brewery maintained high visibility throughout the Midwest through regional broadcasts and sports sponsorships, including partnerships with the Chicago White Sox, Chicago Blackhawks, and Chicago Bulls. The company also developed and popularized the pioneering low-calorie beer formulation that was later acquired by the Miller Brewing Company and rebranded into Miller Lite.

Known variations of the Reserve flat top exist among collectors, featuring differences in metallic versus enamel silver trim finishes, distinct vignette illustrations, and slight adjustments to the mandatory brewery legal text.
