Peter Hand's Reserve Beer Flat Top Can

Peter Hand Reserve Flat Top

Produced by the Peter Hand Brewery Company of Chicago, Illinois, the Peter Hand's Reserve Beer flat top can is a celebrated piece of the Windy City's industrial brewing heritage. Founded in 1891 by Prussian immigrant and Civil War veteran Peter Hand on Chicago's North Side, the brewery grew into a regional powerhouse. By the time operations ceased in the late 1970s, it held the distinction of being Chicago's last remaining legacy commercial brewery.

The Peter Hand's Reserve label showcases classic mid-century graphic design, distinguished by bold typography and vibrant color framing. Notable visual treatments across the line incorporate scenic vignettes, including tavern table scenes and outdoor fishing illustrations. Metallic trim and enamel silver detailing accentuated the branding, making it an eye-catching package on store shelves across the Midwest.

For breweriana collectors, the can connects directly to an influential institution in American beverage history. Peter Hand was heavily invested in sports sponsorships and regional broadcasting promotions. Crucially, the brewery also developed and popularized the pioneering low-calorie beer formulation that was later purchased by Miller Brewing and rebranded into Miller Lite.

Variations of the Peter Hand's Reserve flat top exist across production runs, featuring differences in metallic versus enamel silver trim finishes, distinct graphic vignettes, and slight changes to mandatory brewery legal text. These nuances make the can a popular focus for enthusiasts documenting historic Chicago breweriana.
