Pfeiffer Famous Beer Flat Top Can

Detroit's Pfeiffer Famous Beer

Produced by the Pfeiffer Brewing Company in Detroit, Michigan, the Pfeiffer Famous Beer flat top can represents a classic piece of Great Lakes brewing history. Established in 1889 by Conrad Pfeiffer along Beaufait and Bellevue streets on Detroit's east side, the brewery expanded into one of the city's foremost operations, competing alongside prominent regional powerhouses like Stroh's and Goebel.

The label graphics showcase distinctive mid-century commercial artwork anchored by the brand's mascot, "Johnny Fifer," a colonial-attired fifer character developed in collaboration with Walt Disney Studios artists. These steel cans were produced by major packaging innovators of the era, including the American Can Company and the Continental Can Company.

Collectors prize the brand for its numerous manufacturing nuances. Known variations exist across production runs, displaying differences such as metallic lacquer versus matte background finishes, varied seam constructions, and small visual details such as white shoes versus black shoes on the Johnny Fifer figure. Other releases incorporated outdoor recreation and sporting themes, depicting Michigan pastimes such as sailing, skiing, and fishing. Corporate developments and facility acquisitions also resulted in packaging variations with altered mandatory brewery text and city listings alongside the primary Detroit imprint. The Pfeiffer Famous Beer flat top serves as an enduring symbol of Detroit's industrial canning and brewing heritage.
