Pfeiffer Premium Beer Flat Top Can

Detroit's Classic Pfeiffer Can

The Pfeiffer Premium Beer flat top can represents a prominent piece of Michigan brewing heritage, produced by the Pfeiffer Brewing Company of Detroit. Established in 1889 by German immigrant Conrad Pfeiffer, the company grew from a local neighborhood operation into one of the dominant brewing powerhouses of Detroit during the post-Prohibition era, competing directly with contemporaries like Stroh's and Goebel.

The can's graphic presentation prominently showcases Pfeiffer's classic brand iconography, often featuring "Johnny Fifer"—the fifer mascot dressed in traditional colonial attire—accompanied by bold mid-century typography. Pfeiffer utilized major packaging manufacturers such as the American Can Company and Continental Can Company to produce these steel flat tops.

Pfeiffer also released flat tops featuring outdoor and sporting themes—including scenes of fishing, skiing, and sailing—which celebrated the Great Lakes region's recreation culture. The brewery's mid-century expansion, including its 1954 acquisition of the Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company in St. Paul, Minnesota, introduced label changes with differing mandatory city markings alongside the original Detroit designation. Known variations encompass metallic versus matte lacquer finishes, subtle color shifts, differing seam constructions, and minor revisions to legal brewery text.

Originating from the brewery's historic facilities along Beaufait and Bellevue streets on Detroit's east side, the Pfeiffer Premium Beer flat top remains a celebrated artifact of the city's mid-century industrial brewing era.
