Pfeiffer Premium Beer Flat Top Can

Detroit's Pfeiffer Premium Can

The Pfeiffer Premium Beer flat top can is an emblem of Detroit, Michigan's historic brewing landscape, manufactured for the Pfeiffer Brewing Company. Founded in 1889 by German immigrant Conrad Pfeiffer, the brewery operated its primary facility along Beaufait and Bellevue streets on Detroit's east side. During its peak, Pfeiffer stood as one of the city's major brewing powerhouses, actively contending for market dominance against prominent local rivals like Stroh's and Goebel.

Visually, the can is recognized for its bold mid-century typography and the prominent inclusion of the brewery's mascot, "Johnny Fifer," depicted in traditional colonial attire playing his fife. The containers were produced by major packaging innovators of the era, including the American Can Company and Continental Can Company.

As Pfeiffer expanded distribution and acquired other brewing operations—most notably the Jacob Schmidt Brewing Company in St. Paul, Minnesota—the company altered its packaging to reflect multiple brewery locations. Known variations across the label include changes in mandatory legal text, differences in seam construction, shifts in background color tones, and finishes ranging from matte to metallic lacquer. Additionally, the brewery issued thematic outdoor designs displaying regional pastimes such as sailing, skiing, and fishing. These diverse design executions make the Pfeiffer Premium can a cornerstone item for enthusiasts focused on Michigan breweriana.
