Pfeiffer Premium Beer Flat Top Can

Detroit's Iconic Pfeiffer Can

The Pfeiffer Premium Beer flat top can represents a notable piece of Michigan brewing history, originating from the Pfeiffer Brewing Company in Detroit. Founded in 1889 by German immigrant Conrad Pfeiffer, the brewery grew from a modest neighborhood establishment into one of Detroit's major brewing powerhouses, competing head-to-head with regional giants like Stroh's and Goebel.

For collectors, the graphics of the Pfeiffer flat top can are among its most recognizable features. The can frequently showcases the brewery's beloved mascot, "Johnny Fifer," depicted in colonial attire playing his fife. In addition to the standard branding, the company issued iconic outdoor and sports-themed cans celebrating Great Lakes recreation, featuring illustrations such as skiers, sailboats, and game fish like the northern pike.

Packaging for these cans was sourced through major container manufacturers of the era, including the American Can Company and Continental Can Company. Throughout its production runs, multiple variations emerged that attract specialized interest among breweriana enthusiasts. These variations include differences in background sheen ranging from matte paint to metallic finishes, minor adjustments in mandatory brewery text and city designations, and subtle graphic alterations such as the color of Johnny Fifer's shoes. The can remains an enduring symbol of Detroit's mid-century industrial brewing heritage.
