Phoenix Lager Beer served as the flagship label for the small regional brewery following the repeal of Prohibition. As large national shipping breweries expanded their reach through extensive advertising campaigns during the postwar years, regional independent labels struggled to match their distribution power, and Phoenix Lager was ultimately discontinued when the brewery ceased operations in the early 1950s.

The brewery's origins trace back to 1865, when John Rosa opened a brewing enterprise in West Bay City. Later known as the West Bay City Brewing Company, the physical plant suffered a catastrophic fire in 1896. When it was rebuilt in 1898, the owners aptly rechristened it the Phoenix Brewing Company in honor of the mythical bird rising from the ashes. The onset of statewide and national Prohibition halted beer production, prompting brewmaster Hans Behrens to keep the facility afloat by marketing malt extracts and syrups. Behrens eventually took full ownership and reopened the brewery after Repeal in 1933. While fellow local competitors like Kolb Brewing closed, Phoenix endured as the final operating brewery in Bay City before closing its doors around 1952.
