Phoenix Premium Beer Flat Top Can

Buffalo's Phoenix Premium Beer Can

The Phoenix Premium Beer Flat Top Can represents a notable chapter in Western New York's rich industrial brewing heritage. Originating from Buffalo, New York, the can was produced under International Breweries, Inc., which operated the historic Phoenix Brewery plant on Emslie Street.

Brewery Background and Context

The roots of the Phoenix brewing operation in Buffalo stretch back through decades of local brewing history, including iterations such as the East Buffalo Brewing Company. Following an acquisition by International Breweries, Inc., the Buffalo facility became a key branch in a multi-state network of regional breweries. Cans produced under the International banner in Buffalo document this transformative era of post-war consolidation when national conglomerates absorbed longstanding local breweries.

Can Design and Collector Appeal

The can features bold Phoenix branding paired with classic mid-century graphic elements and clean typography tailored for tavern backbars and market shelves throughout the region. The heraldic imagery and sharp color palette make it a standout representative of Buffalo's mid-century breweriana.

For collectors, the can holds strong appeal as a connection to the thriving mid-century Queen City brewing landscape, which operated alongside other local brands like Iroquois and Simon Pure. Variations are known to exist across different manufacturing runs, differing in small technical details such as canning line marks and minor text placements on the mandatory panels. The can remains a desirable centerpiece for enthusiasts focusing on New York State canning history.
