Pickwick Brew Beer Flat Top Can

Boston's Pickwick Brew Flat Top

The Pickwick Brew flat top can represents a classic piece of New England brewing heritage, originating from Haffenreffer & Company in Boston, Massachusetts. Established in 1870 in Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood by German immigrant Rudolph Frederick Haffenreffer, the brewery expanded into one of the region's most prominent brewing operations.

The Pickwick label drew inspiration from Charles Dickens' classic novel, The Pickwick Papers, reflecting a literary motif that Haffenreffer utilized across multiple marketing and packaging formats to establish brand recognition across the Northeast. While the brewery produced several beverages under the Pickwick moniker—including ale and bock offerings—the Pickwick Brew design features traditional heraldic detailing, bold typography, and authentic Boston brewer markings.

Among breweriana collectors, Boston-labeled cans from Haffenreffer hold historical prestige. The brewery operated through the post-Prohibition era until the mid-1960s. Its eventual closure temporarily left Massachusetts without a major commercial operating brewery for the first time in centuries, after which brand trademarks transitioned to the Narragansett Brewing Company in Rhode Island.

Known variations of this flat top can exist in the collecting community, showing subtle differences in canning manufacturer marks—primarily between the American Can Company and Continental Can Company—as well as minor shifts in mandatory text placement and seam details. Today, the original Jamaica Plain complex on Germania Street remains an architectural landmark, while this can endures as a treasured artifact of Massachusetts industrial history.
