Piels Light Lager Beer 12 Oz Zip Top Can

South Bend Piels Light Lager

The Piels Light Lager 12 oz zip top can represents a notable chapter in mid-twentieth-century American brewing history, illustrating an era of major regional consolidation. Originally established in Brooklyn, New York, by the Piel brothers, the brand became a household name across the East Coast, propelled into pop-culture fame through widespread advertising featuring cartoon spokesmen Bert and Harry Piel.

When the Piel enterprise was acquired by the Associated Brewing Company of Detroit, Michigan, the brand joined an expansive multi-plant network that included Drewrys Ltd. U.S.A., Inc. in South Bend, Indiana. To optimize regional distribution across the Midwest, Associated utilized Drewrys' South Bend facilities to can Piels beer. This arrangement turned the historic Indiana brewery into a key production site for a traditionally New York label.

Cans bearing the Drewrys Ltd. U.S.A. mandatory line from South Bend feature distinct attributes that set them apart from issues originating at other Associated-owned facilities, such as those in Brooklyn, Willimansett, or Chicago. The face of the can highlights the traditional Piels heraldic crest set against clean red-and-white graphics, clearly labeled as "Light Lager Beer." Known variations exist across different manufacturing runs, showcasing subtle differences in factory press marks, seam styles, and mandatory text layout.

For breweriana collectors, this can serves as a classic crossover piece, bridging East Coast brand history with the industrial heritage of South Bend's Muessel-Drewrys brewing facility.
