Piels Light Lager Beer Flat Top Can

Piel Bros. Staten Island Flat Top

The Piels Light Lager Beer flat top bearing the Staten Island mandatory reflects a pivotal chapter in the history of Piel Bros. Brewery. Originally founded in Brooklyn in 1883 by Gottfried, Michael, and Wilhelm Piel, the regional brewing powerhouse expanded its operations to Staten Island following the acquisition of the former Rubsam & Horrmann (R&H) brewing plant in Stapleton. Cans produced with the Staten Island city designation showcase this mid-century period of regional expansion.

Design and Branding

The can features Piels' classic mid-century graphic presentation, highlighted by crisp typography, heraldic branding elements, and the prominent "Piels Light Lager Beer" label. The lower mandatory text designates "Piel Bros., Staten Island, New York". During the era this can circulated, Piels was a household name in the New York metropolitan market, driven by the famous animated advertising campaign featuring the comedic animated brothers Bert and Harry Piel.

Collector Notes and Variations

For breweriana collectors, the Staten Island mandatory represents an interesting geographic divergence from the more common Brooklyn-labeled releases. Known production variations exist across different can manufacturing runs, including subtle differences in the mandatory font layout, side panel legal statements, and fabrication stamps from can manufacturers such as the Crown Cork & Seal Company and American Can Company.
