Piels Real Premium Draft 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Piels Real Draft Willimansett

The Piels Real Premium Draft 12 Oz Tab Top Can represents a notable era of regional brewing history tied to Piel Bros.' Massachusetts operations. While Piels originated in Brooklyn, New York, the company expanded its regional footprint by acquiring and operating the former Hampden-Harvard brewing facility situated along the Connecticut River in Willimansett (a section of Chicopee), Massachusetts.

Marketing and Design

During this period, Piel Bros. leaned heavily into the popular industry trend of offering "Real Draft" beer packaged for home consumption. Cans carried bold graphics and prominent promotional statements declaring the beer to be genuine, non-pasteurized draft beer that did not require refrigeration until opened. This packaging capitalized on modern cold-filtration advances, bringing keg-quality beer to off-premise retail.

The brand was further supported by one of the most famous advertising campaigns in American brewing history, featuring animated caricatures of Bert and Harry Piel, voiced by the legendary comedy duo Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding. The Willimansett brewery produced these cans to supply distribution networks across New England and the Northeast.

Collector Notes and Variations

For breweriana collectors, the Willimansett mandatory statement on the can makes it an interesting regional artifact. Collectors recognize variations of this release that differ in factory text placement, minor graphic adjustments, and metal composition used by various container manufacturers supplying the Massachusetts packaging lines.
