Pilsener Type Lager Beer Cone Top Can

Frederick's Pilsener Lager Can

The Frederick's Pilsener Type Lager Beer cone top represents a notable chapter in the mid-century brewing history of Cook County, Illinois. Produced by Frederick's Brewing Company in Thornton, Illinois, the can originated after the Frederick brothers—Joseph, Dominic, Frank, and James—took over and reorganized the former Illinois Brewing Company plant.

Operating out of a historic brewery site originally founded in the 19th century by John S. Bielfeldt, Frederick's expanded distribution significantly during the 1940s. During World War II, the brewery secured contracts to supply beer to United States military training bases, shipping railcars loaded with beer to army camps across the nation.

The can design displays classic mid-century typography prominently highlighting the "Pilsener Type Lager Beer" designation, accompanied by the Thornton, Illinois mandatory brewery information. For collectors of regional breweriana, variations exist in the legal and tax text—such as iterations bearing the "Internal Revenue Tax Paid" (IRTP) statement alongside slight changes in text positioning.

Because the brewery operated for only a limited period before the facilities were transferred to the McAvoy Brewing Company, this can remains a key artifact representing suburban Chicago's post-Prohibition brewing landscape.
