Pilser's Original Extra Dry Pilsener Beer Flat Top Can

Pilser's Extra Dry Flat Top

The Pilser's Original Extra Dry Pilsener Beer flat top can represents a notable chapter in Mid-Atlantic brewing history. Packaged by the Metropolis Brewery of New Jersey, Inc. at its Trenton facility on Lalor and Lamberton Streets, this can highlights an era when Trenton was a significant regional hub for commercial brewing and contract packaging.

Brewery Background

Metropolis Brewery established its Trenton operations after acquiring the former Peoples Brewing Company plant. The brewery built a diverse portfolio of regional names and revival labels, making the Pilser's brand a regular fixture on store shelves across the Northeast. While the Pilser name had roots extending into New York brewing history, Metropolis brought the label to New Jersey canning lines during the height of the flat top era.

Graphic Design and Collector Appeal

The can features bold mid-century typography centered around the prominent "Pilser's Original" banner and crisp "Extra Dry" designation. Designed for maximum shelf visibility, the label graphic incorporates classic heraldic accents and clean metallic detailing that collectors prize among East Coast regional breweriana.

Known Variations

For breweriana enthusiasts, several variations of the Pilser's Original Extra Dry flat top are documented. These variations typically differ in the legal mandatory text on the side panels, variations in manufacturer logos from can suppliers such as the Continental Can Company, and subtle adjustments to the phrasing of the brewery's corporate imprint. Minor differences in lid metal compositions also appear across production batches.

Legacy

Today, the can remains a sought-after piece representing New Jersey's postwar brewing industry. It serves as a physical record of Metropolis Brewery's extensive distribution efforts and stands as an enduring example of twentieth-century steel can lithography.
