Point Special Beer Flat Top Can

Point Special Beer Flat Top Can

The Point Special Beer flat top can represents a classic mid-century canning era for one of Wisconsin's most celebrated regional breweries. Designed in a standard twelve-ounce format, the can is distinguished by a bold diagonal red banner set against a deep royal blue background. Centered above the script brand name sits a circular crest featuring the Wisconsin badger framed by barley sheaves and stars, bordered by the brewery's name. This vibrant design contributed to the packaging style that local patrons affectionately nicknamed the "Blue Bullet".

Point Special has long served as the brewery's flagship offering. During Prohibition, the name was maintained on near-beer malt tonics to keep the brand alive, before returning to full-strength lager upon repeal. The brand achieved legendary status in 1973 when prominent Chicago columnist Mike Royko conducted an extensive blind taste test of American beers and declared Point Special the finest in the nation. Because the brewery chose to keep production localized rather than overextend its capacity, it embraced the famous regional marketing slogan, "When You're Out of Point, You're Out of Town".

Founded in 1857 by German immigrants Frank Wahle and George Ruder along the Wisconsin River, the Stevens Point Brewery ranks among the oldest continuously operating brewing operations in the United States. It supplied lager to Union soldiers during the Civil War and reorganized under the name Stevens Point Beverage Company to navigate Prohibition. As post-war consolidation forced many small regional breweries to close, Stevens Point Brewery persevered through strong community loyalty and independent management.

For vintage breweriana collectors, mid-century flat top cans from Stevens Point represent a classic chapter in Midwestern brewing heritage. The bold graphics, iconic badger emblem, and the brewery's storied survival against national brewing conglomerates make this can a standout piece in any collection of regional American beer history.
