Primo Hawaiian Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Schlitz-Era Primo Hawaiian Beer Can

Produced during the ownership era of the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company, the Primo Hawaiian Beer 12 oz tab top can represents a notable chapter in Hawaii's brewing history. Primo traces its heritage back to the turn of the twentieth century with the Honolulu Brewing & Malting Company. Following Schlitz's acquisition of the brand, packaging and production expanded to meet immense local demand, propelled by strong resident loyalty and the islands' booming post-statehood tourism industry. During this peak period, Primo captured a dominant majority share of the Hawaiian beer market.

The lithography highlights traditional Hawaiian iconography. The graphic design prominently features an outline map of the Hawaiian island chain alongside the classic Hawaiian warrior bust, accompanied by bold typography. The mandatory brewery text on the can designates the manufacturer as the Hawaii division of Jos. Schlitz in Honolulu.

For breweriana enthusiasts, this can reflects the mid-1970s packaging transition under Schlitz ownership. Collectors recognize manufacturing variations across production runs, with subtle differences found in the shading of the island chain, background tones, and minor text placements near the seam. Because production was eventually moved away from the islands prior to the brand changing hands again, cans bearing the Honolulu, Hawaii brewery address remain enduring favorites in Pacific breweriana collections.
