Prior Lager Beer Flat Top Can

Valley Forge Prior Lager Flat Top

This 12-ounce flat top container showcases a mid-century graphic layout anchored by a central heraldic motif flanked by a lion and a unicorn. The prominent circular emblem frames the stylized lowercase "prior" logo, accented by an orange-red dot above the letter "i." Below the central insignia, the label displays the brand's trademark slogan, "LIQUID LUXURY". A notable feature of this specific production run is the black mandatory text printed across the bottom green band, identifying the beverage as brewed and packaged by the Valley Forge Brewing Company in Norristown, Pennsylvania.

Prior was originally introduced during the 1940s as a super-premium, European-style pilsner crafted to rival imported lagers. Positioned as an upscale alternative to standard regional beers, it was heavily marketed under the "Liquid Luxury" tagline across print advertisements, specialty glassware, and tavern displays. Over subsequent decades, the brand maintained its prestige reputation across the Mid-Atlantic market before eventually transitioning into the expanding portfolio of Philadelphia brewing giant C. Schmidt & Sons.

The origins of the brewery date back to the late 1870s, when the Adam Scheidt Brewing Company was established in Norristown. Scheidt survived Prohibition by producing cereal beverages, soda, and ice, allowing the facility to reopen smoothly upon Repeal. The company prospered with popular labels like Valley Forge Beer, Ram's Head Ale, and Prior. In the early 1960s, the brewery adopted the Valley Forge Brewing Company corporate name. Shortly afterward, C. Schmidt & Sons acquired the operation, running the Norristown plant as a branch facility until its closure in 1975.

Among breweriana collectors, this flat top is a valued piece of Pennsylvania's post-war brewing history. Cans bearing the Valley Forge Brewing Company mandatory represent a specific transitional period in the brewery's timeline just prior to its full absorption into Schmidt's network, making it a sought-after addition for collectors of regional heraldic designs and Mid-Atlantic breweriana.
