Prior Preferred Beer Flat Top Can

Prior Preferred Beer Flat Top Can

The Prior Preferred Beer flat top can represents a notable chapter in Mid-Atlantic brewing history, reflecting the corporate expansion and brand acquisitions of Philadelphia's powerhouse brewer, C. Schmidt & Sons.

Brand Heritage and Schmidt Acquisition

The Prior brand originally gained prominence as a European-style premium label developed under the Adam Scheidt Brewing Company of Norristown, Pennsylvania. Promoted heavily with the trademarked slogan "Liquid Luxury," Prior was marketed as an upscale offering distinct from standard regional lagers. Following Schmidt's acquisition of the Adam Scheidt operations, production and canning were integrated into the C. Schmidt & Sons network, with canning lines producing steel flat tops bearing Philadelphia brewing lineage.

Can Design and Visual Identity

The can's artwork was styled to reinforce its prestige image. Typically rendered over a clean white background, the face highlights the bold "Prior Preferred" typography flanked by a regal heraldic crest and the familiar "Liquid Luxury" motto. The mandatory text identifies the packaging under the C. Schmidt & Sons umbrella (often listed as Prior Brewery / C. Schmidt & Sons, Inc., Philadelphia, PA).

Collector Notes and Variations

For breweriana collectors, the Prior Preferred flat top is a classic representative of post-Prohibition regional brewing consolidation. Variations exist across production runs, showing subtle differences in brewery identification text, lid stampings, and metallic trim details. The can remains a staple acquisition for those specializing in Pennsylvania brewing history and the expansive brand catalog of C. Schmidt & Sons.
