Prizer Extra Dry Premium Beer Flat Top Can

Prizer Extra Dry Flat Top Overview

The Prizer Extra Dry Premium Beer flat top can represents an interesting chapter in the mid-century brewing heritage of Pennsylvania. Packaged by The Old Reading Brewery, Inc. of Reading, Pennsylvania, this can was part of the brewery's portfolio of regional specialty and value labels produced alongside its flagship Old Reading beers.

Brewery Background and Label History

The Old Reading Brewery operated out of 9th and Laurel Streets in Reading, a city renowned for its rich brewing tradition in Berks County. Following the repeal of Prohibition, the facility resumed brewing operations and established a robust lineup of offerings. In addition to its primary brand, Old Reading produced labels such as Prizer, Bergheim, and Class A to cater to diverse consumer markets across the Mid-Atlantic region. Prizer Extra Dry Premium Beer was marketed with a distinct emblem and bold mid-century lettering that highlighted its dry brewing profile.

Can Design and Collector Significance

For breweriana collectors, the Prizer Extra Dry flat top is a quintessential example of regional Pennsylvania canning. The label features a clean, striking design centered around traditional brewing heraldry and crisp color contrast.

In collector circles, variations of the can are documented, displaying differences in can manufacturer marks, mandatory text placement along the seam, and subtle changes in the brewery's corporate wording. Because The Old Reading Brewery eventually ceased operations during the consolidation era of American regional brewing, cans bearing the Prizer name have become popular display pieces commemorating Reading's local industrial brewing history.
