Prizer Extra Dry Premium Beer Flat Top Can

Prizer Extra Dry Flat Top Can

The Prizer Extra Dry Premium Beer flat top can represents a notable regional label produced by the Old Reading Brewery, located at 9th and Laurel Streets in Reading, Pennsylvania. While the brewery was best known for its flagship Old Reading and Reading Premium labels, it maintained an extensive portfolio of secondary and contract-style brands to capture wider distribution across the Mid-Atlantic market. Among these specialized lines, Prizer was packaged as an extra dry premium beer.

Brewery History and Portfolio

The Old Reading Brewery was an industrial staple of Berks County. Following the repeal of Prohibition, the plant resumed operations and navigated the post-war packaging revolution by rolling out a variety of canned labels. In addition to its core line, the company produced companion labels such as Bergheim, Class A, Yorktown, and Bru-Joy. Prizer Extra Dry served as an economical yet premium-styled option during an era when local breweries used diverse branding to secure shelf space against expanding national shipping brewers.

Collector Details and Variations

For breweriana collectors, the Prizer Extra Dry can is appreciated for its clean, mid-century graphic layout featuring bold typography. Several variations of this flat top exist in the hobby, primarily distinguishable by slight differences in side-panel mandatory text—such as listings identifying "The Old Reading Brewery, Inc." versus "Reading Brewing Company"—as well as minor alterations in copyright marks and canning text formatting. Because companion brands were generally produced in smaller volumes than the brewery's primary namesake beers, these cans serve as important artifacts documenting the diverse marketing strategies of Pennsylvania's historic brewing heritage.
