R & H Sparkling Ale Flat Top Can

R & H Sparkling Ale Flat Top

The R & H Sparkling Ale Flat Top Can represents a classic artifact of New York brewing history, produced by the Rubsam & Horrmann Brewing Company based in the Stapleton neighborhood of Staten Island, New York.

Brewery History

Established in 1870 by German immigrants Joseph Rubsam and August Horrmann, the Rubsam & Horrmann Brewing Company operated out of the Atlantic Brewery site on Canal Street. R & H grew into one of Staten Island's largest and most enduring brewing operations, distributing its products widely throughout the greater New York metropolitan market. The company navigated the Prohibition era and remained an independent regional favorite until 1953, when the brewery was acquired by Brooklyn-based Piel Brothers.

Can Features & Collectibility

The can showcases the bold, recognizable "R & H" monogram and classic typography, reflecting the distinct branding that Rubsam & Horrmann utilized across its product lineup. While lager was the brewery's high-volume product, their sparkling ale line catered to regional demand for top-fermented ales in the mid-20th century.

Variations of the can exist among collectors, reflecting different manufacturing plants, minor text shifts, and legal labeling revisions from different canning runs. Its direct connection to Staten Island's industrial brewing past makes it an important focus for New York breweriana collectors.
