Rainier Beer Flat Top Can

Sicks' Rainier Flat Top Legacy

The Rainier Beer flat top can produced by Sicks' Rainier Brewing in Seattle, Washington, occupies a celebrated place in Pacific Northwest breweriana. Issued under the stewardship of brewing magnate Emil Sick, this can represents an influential era in regional packaging history.

The Jubilee and Party Releases

Sicks' Rainier distinguished its packaging by introducing pictorial label designs across its canning runs. Widely categorized by enthusiasts as the Jubilee and Party series, these decorative cans featured lively illustrations depicting outdoor leisure, Pacific Northwest recreation, musical gatherings, and folklore figures such as Paul Bunyan. Framed by metallic finishes and slogans such as "Rainier for Life," these illustrated cans moved beyond standard corporate labeling to celebrate regional culture.

The Seattle Wind Tunnel Discovery

A famous chapter in breweriana history directly associated with the Rainier flat top is the legendary Seattle wind tunnel discovery. Decades after distribution, a massive forgotten cache of Rainier flat tops was uncovered hidden inside a decommissioned aeronautical wind tunnel facility in Seattle. The discovery brought a wide array of graphic scenes and factory examples to light, generating widespread excitement among hobbyists and permanently reshaping the documentation and availability of Pacific Northwest breweriana.

Manufacturing and Variations

Collectors actively study this flat top for its diverse manufacturing and aesthetic variations. Across production runs, differences appear in metallic color palettes, rim lettering layouts, mandatory brewery text phrasing, and factory canning codes. Cans manufactured by the American Can Company feature the trademark "Keglined" insignia along the seam, while distinct state-mandated tax stamps can also be found across various lid stampings.
