Reading Light Premium Beer 12 Oz Zip/Tab Top Can

Reading Light Premium Tab Top Can

Produced by the Reading Brewing Company in Reading, Pennsylvania, the Reading Light Premium Beer 12 oz can represents an iconic era of regional brewing in the Keystone State. Originating from the historic plant located at Ninth and Laurel Streets, the Reading label became an Eastern Pennsylvania institution celebrated for its prominent local identity.

Historical Context & Branding

Founded in 1886 by Philip Bessinger, the Reading Brewing Company weathered Prohibition and later experienced a major mid-century resurgence. The brewery adopted memorable marketing slogans, famously billing the beverage as "The Friendly Beer for Friendly People" and later "The Friendly Beer for Modern People". The can's vibrant typography and distinctive script logo made it a familiar fixture across taverns, sporting events, and distributor shelves throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.

Collector Notes & Variations

As independent regional breweries faced mounting pressure from national macro-breweries, the Reading Brewing Company ceased independent operations in 1976, after which the label changed hands across several brewing outfits. Because the brewery utilized major container manufacturers throughout its manufacturing runs, variations exist among surviving examples. These differences primarily appear in manufacturer copyright stamps, mandatory distributor text, and top lid rim markings, making the can a staple focus for collectors of Pennsylvania breweriana.
