Red Cap Ale Flat Top Can

Red Cap Ale Three-City Flat Top

This flat top can was issued for Carling's Red Cap Ale, associated with the Carling Brewing Company operation in Belleville, Illinois. As Carling expanded its distribution footprint across the United States during the mid-20th century, the mandatory text on its cans was frequently updated to reflect regional plant operations. This particular issue lists three production cities on its side panel: Cleveland, Belleville, and St. Louis.

The label graphics are set against a rich emerald green metallic background. The central oval vignette features the illustrated side-profile of the brand's classic mascot wearing a bright red sporting cap. The portrait sits atop a tightly repeating background pattern of the name "CARLING," with the bold block lettering "RED CAP" and cursive "Ale" set directly below.

At the top of the can, a horizontal rectangular banner mirrors the repeating text pattern with a bordered "CARLING" cartouche in the center. Encircling the base of the front panel is the company's mid-century marketing slogan, "The Best Brews in the World come from Carling's," printed in flowing white cursive script.

Among breweriana collectors, Red Cap cans of this era are appreciated for their distinct graphic layout and the geographical variations found in the brewery location listings across different production runs.
