Red Fox Beer Flat Top Can

Red Fox Beer Cumberland Flat Top

The Red Fox Beer Flat Top Can produced by the Cumberland Brewing Company of Cumberland, Maryland, is a standout piece among regional breweriana and animal-label collectors. While the Red Fox brand was packaged by several regional breweries across the country—such as operations in Virginia, Connecticut, and Illinois—cans carrying the Cumberland mandatory text are among the most elusive and sought after.

Brewery Heritage

The Cumberland Brewing Company, founded in 1890 on North Centre Street, was one of western Maryland's premier brewing institutions. While primarily known for regional staples like Old Export Beer and Gamecock Ale, the brewery also filled cans under specialty and regional brand labels, including Red Fox. Cumberland Brewing Company remained an independent brewing staple in the Allegheny Mountains until being purchased by its cross-town competitor, Queen City Brewing Company.

Label Artwork and Design

The can features an iconic visual design centered around its wildlife theme. The face displays a prominent illustration of a red fox paired with bold, classic mid-century typography spelling out the brand name. The dynamic animal motif makes the can a favorite for collectors specializing in fauna and thematic graphic designs.

Collector Appeal and Variations

Within the hobby, the Cumberland-issued flat top is prized due to its comparative scarcity compared to examples produced by other contract packers. Known variations exist across the extended Red Fox label family, showcasing differences in mandatory city text, canning line specifications, and regional distribution details. The Cumberland version remains an essential milestone for Mid-Atlantic regional collections and a celebrated artifact of Maryland's brewing history.
