Red Fox Premium Beer Flat Top Can

Red Fox Premium Beer Flat Top

The Red Fox Premium Beer Flat Top Can is an emblematic regional release issued by Ruppert-Virginia, Inc., based in Norfolk, Virginia. The brand traces its origins to the Largay Brewing Company of Waterbury, Connecticut, which created the original Red Fox recipe and branding. When New York's Jacob Ruppert Brewery acquired the rights to the label, they expanded its distribution into the Mid-Atlantic region.

To establish a localized southern presence, Jacob Ruppert purchased the former Southern Breweries facility in Norfolk, operating the plant under the Jacob Ruppert-Virginia subsidiary. The Norfolk brewery packaged Red Fox Premium Beer in standard steel flat tops manufactured with American Can Company's canning process.

The front of the can features a prominent illustration of a red fox set against bold lettering. Among collectors, known variations exist across production runs, featuring differences in statutory statements—such as versions bearing the "Internal Revenue Tax Paid" (IRTP) notice versus non-IRTP releases—as well as slight modifications to manufacturer credits and brewery text layout. Because Norfolk was home to only a select few commercial brewing operations, the can represents an important artifact of mid-century Tidewater brewing heritage.
