Red Lion Sparkling Ale Cone Top Can

Red Lion Sparkling Ale Cone Top

The Red Lion Sparkling Ale cone top can is an esteemed piece of breweriana originating from the Burger Brewing Company in Cincinnati, Ohio. While Burger was primarily recognized throughout the Midwest for its namesake lagers, the brewery introduced the Red Lion label as a distinct offering within its specialty ale portfolio.

Label Design and Artwork

The design is defined by a prominent red heraldic lion emblem set against a clean background, drawing upon traditional crest-inspired motifs associated with classic ales. Prominent lettering presents the "Red Lion" title above the emblem, with "Sparkling Ale" anchored cleanly beneath it. The bold, contrasting color scheme was crafted to create an eye-catching presentation on retail shelves.

Manufacturing and Known Variations

Produced on Continental Can Company can stock, the can features a low-profile cone top profile. Known variations exist among surviving examples, reflecting subtle manufacturing differences in can base construction and side-panel factory markings.

Collector Significance

Among collectors of Cincinnati breweriana and specialty ale cans, the Red Lion label is especially desirable. Because Burger Brewing Company allocated the vast majority of its canning runs to its flagship brand, the Red Lion Sparkling Ale was filled in considerably smaller quantities, making it a prized highlight from the Queen City's brewing history.
