Red Top Ale Cone Top Can

Red Top Ale Cone Top Overview

The Red Top Ale Cone Top Can is a classic piece of Midwestern breweriana, produced by the Red Top Brewing Company of Cincinnati, Ohio. Red Top expanded rapidly after the repeal of Prohibition, operating out of the historic Dayton Street facility formerly owned by the John Hauck Brewing Company, and grew to become one of the largest brewing operations in Ohio.

Design and Aesthetics

The can features a bold graphic layout highlighted by deep red, crisp white, and metallic gold accents. The face prominently displays the "Red Top" name along with the tagline "The Premium Ale" and brewery location details. Manufactured as a high-profile cone top by the Continental Can Company, these cans were assembled with painted or bare metal spouts.

Known Variations

Collectors recognize multiple variations of the Red Top Ale cone top. These differences correspond to changes in federal labeling laws and packaging updates over the course of the brand's lifespan. Certain examples feature the "Internal Revenue Tax Paid" (IRTP) statement, whereas others produced after federal regulations changed omit this tax marking. Additional variations include subtle differences in metallic gold versus yellow trim, spout finishes, and minor text adjustments along the side seam.

Representing Cincinnati's rich post-Prohibition brewing legacy, the Red Top Ale cone top remains a highly sought-after staple among can collectors.
