Red Top Extra Dry Beer Flat Top Can

Cincinnati's Red Top Extra Dry Can

The Red Top Extra Dry Beer Flat Top Can is an iconic piece of mid-century Midwestern breweriana, issued by the Red Top Brewing Company of Cincinnati, Ohio. Emerging from Cincinnati's historic brewing district, Red Top expanded into one of the largest independent brewing operations in Ohio during the post-Prohibition era.

Background and Design

Manufactured using the American Can Company's patented "Keglined" process, this flat top container carried the flagship Red Top branding, known for its bold typography and vibrant color palette. The "Extra Dry" designation reflected the major shift in American marketing during the 1950s, when regional brewers competed against national shipping giants by promoting lighter, crisper profiles.

Collector Variations and History

Can collectors recognize several distinct label variations for Red Top Extra Dry. These variations include subtle shifts in background metallic tones, differences in mandatory brewery text and copyright statements, and thematic promotional tie-ins featuring sports and leisure illustrations.

Following intense competition and leadership transitions in the late 1950s—including a brief management tenure led by former New York Yankees baseball star Tommy Henrich—the Cincinnati plant ceased operations. The Red Top labels and production rights were subsequently sold to the Terre Haute Brewing Company in Indiana, which continued canning the brand for a short period before it was retired entirely. Today, cans bearing the original Cincinnati, Ohio mandatory text remain enduring favorites among collectors of Ohio breweriana.
