Red Top XXXtra Ale Flat Top Can

Red Top XXXtra Ale Can History

The Red Top XXXtra Ale flat top can represents a notable chapter in the heritage of the Red Top Brewing Company of Cincinnati, Ohio. Originating as the Red Top Malt Company in 1904, the enterprise navigated Prohibition by producing malt extracts and soft drinks before transforming into a major regional brewing powerhouse following Repeal. Operating out of Cincinnati's historic brewing corridors—including the former John Hauck Brewery on Dayton Street and the acquired Clyffside Brewing complex known as Plant #2—Red Top distributed its canned offerings across dozens of states.

The "XXXtra" branding highlighted the brewery's strong ale recipes, utilizing bold mid-century typography and striking graphic design to catch the eye of consumers in an increasingly competitive marketplace. Over its production lifespan, the can appeared in different variations featuring subtle alterations in manufacturer markings and label text, reflecting the brewery's expanding multi-plant logistics.

In the 1950s, Red Top made major sports and business news when it named New York Yankees baseball legend Tommy Henrich—widely known as "Old Reliable"—as the brewery's president to spearhead high-profile promotional campaigns. Although the Cincinnati brewing landmark eventually closed its doors later that decade, preserved specimens of the XXXtra Ale flat top can remain sought-after pieces of Queen City breweriana.
