Red Wing Premium Beer Cone Top Can

Red Wing Premium Beer Cone Top

Produced by the Goodhue County Brewing Company in Red Wing, Minnesota, this cone top can represents a brief chapter in post–World War II Midwestern brewing history. Goodhue operated from 1948 until 1951, utilizing the cone top format that allowed regional breweries to fill cans using standard bottling lines without needing costly retooling.

Label Art and Typography

The front of the can features an ornate design that draws directly from the brewery's namesake city and county. Set within an arched shield is a detailed profile portrait of a Native American chief adorned in a feathered headdress. Spreading outward from both sides of the central shield are stylized red wings, while a small crest featuring an intertwined "G" monogram sits directly beneath the chief's portrait to mark the Goodhue name. Below the illustration, the brand name "RED WING" appears in broad serif lettering with decorative inline accents, followed by "Premium" in red cursive script and "BEER" anchored in gold-and-black block text.

Regulatory Markings

To meet various state alcohol distribution laws of the era, the brewery packaged its beer under differing mandatory alcohol declarations. This can carries the "STRONG" statement, distinguishing it from standard low-point versions labeled to indicate beer containing not more than 3.2 percent alcohol by weight. Because the Goodhue brewery operated for only a few years, surviving cone tops from this Red Wing operation remain prized artifacts among regional breweriana collectors.
