Regal Amber Beer Flat Top Can

San Francisco Opening Instruction Can

Produced by the Regal Amber Brewing Company of San Francisco, California, this 12-ounce flat top is a classic example of early West Coast canned beer packaging. Documented as entry 726 in Kevin Lilek's catalog of opening instruction cans, this container represents the initial era of the American Can Company's "Keglined" canning technology.

Label Graphics and Legal Notations

The side panel features step-by-step illustrated opening instructions beneath the bold directive "COOL BEFORE OPENING." The illustrated diagrams depict hands demonstrating how to hook an opener under the top rim and lift firmly, notably featuring a miniature rendering of the Regal Amber Beer can within the artwork itself. Just below the first instructional frame sits the American Can Company lithography identifier mark "A.C.CO.94A".

Beneath the graphic panels, the can bears the "Keglined" trademark logo alongside the early "PATENTS PENDING" designation, which appeared before specific patent numbers were granted and printed on subsequent production runs. Mandatory period regulatory text includes "CONTENTS 12 FL. OZ.", the state brewing permit notice "PERMIT CALIF. U 1118", and the pre-1950 federal tax statement "INTERNAL REVENUE TAX PAID." Encircling the base is a stylized white interlocking grain and hop wreath border that anchors the lower edge of the label.
