Regal Amber Beer Flat Top Can

San Francisco's Regal Amber Can

Produced by the Regal Amber Brewing Company located on 20th Street in San Francisco's Mission District, the Regal Amber Beer flat top is a classic artifact of Northern California brewing history. Following the repeal of Prohibition, Regal Amber expanded steadily to become one of California's largest operating breweries, with its canned lineup showcasing the bold, solid-color aesthetic characteristic of early canning design.

The front face of the can features distinctive "Regal Amber" lettering with "Beer" printed in equal prominence. The back includes an opening instruction panel, with earlier manufacturing iterations showcasing an illustrated diagram of the can alongside patent text. Across different production runs, several variations exist, featuring subtle changes in mandatory brewery statements, border details, and tax markings.

In addition to standard retail distribution, the brewery produced promotional novelty drinking mugs fashioned directly from can bodies fitted with rolled rims and applied handles. The can is also central to breweriana folklore due to notable architectural recoveries, including a memorable 1978 discovery where a contractor remodeling a Victorian residence near Alamo Square uncovered a half-case of cans sealed behind a ceiling.

In the postwar era, the brewery shifted its primary marketing efforts toward the Regal Pale brand, eventually renaming the entire business the Regal Pale Brewing Company before ceasing operations in the 1960s. The original Regal Amber flat top remains one of the defining pre-war artifacts from San Francisco's mid-century brewing scene.
