Regal Premium Beer Flat Top Can

Miami's Regal Premium Beer Can

The Regal Premium Beer flat top can is a prominent piece of Florida's brewing history, originating from the production facility on Northwest 13th Street in Miami. A well-known piece of brand lore is that the name "Regal" was originally coined simply by spelling the word "lager" in reverse. The label traces its lineage back to the American Brewing Company, which established a major regional footprint in South Florida.

This can holds significant historical interest for breweriana collectors due to the corporate maneuvers surrounding its Miami plant. During its operational lifespan, the facility was acquired by industry giant Anheuser-Busch. However, this purchase triggered a landmark federal antitrust lawsuit when government regulators ruled that the acquisition fostered an anti-competitive regional monopoly. The court subsequently ordered Anheuser-Busch to divest the property, after which it was transferred to the National Brewing Company's Regal Brewery division.

Because of these corporate transitions, flat top cans bearing the Regal Premium label feature differing mandatory brewery lines, including imprints credited to American Brewing Company, Anheuser-Busch, and National Brewing Company. Known variations also exhibit different can manufacturer marks, such as stamps from the Continental Can Company and the American Can Company's patented "Keglined" oval.

Visually, the can's design is defined by a bold crown insignia and heraldic accents, accompanied by the heritage tagline, "A Premium Beer Since 1890".
