Regal Select Beer Flat Top Can

Maier Regal Select Flat Top Can

The Regal Select Beer flat top can produced by Maier Brewing Company of Los Angeles, California, represents a notable chapter in West Coast brewing and packaging history. Maier Brewing Company, situated along the historic commercial brewing corridor in downtown Los Angeles, operated as one of Southern California's longest-surviving industrial breweries. Under the leadership of industrialist Paul Kalmanovitz, Maier expanded its portfolio by acquiring rights to regional legacy labels, including the popular Regal Select brand.

Manufactured primarily in conjunction with the National Can Company, the Regal Select flat top can features classic mid-century graphic styling. Its design centers around bold red and gold heraldic accents, clean typography, and distinctive crest artwork that highlighted the label's regional heritage. Over the course of its production run, the can was issued in standard 12-ounce sizes as well as 16-ounce half-quart formats.

Among breweriana collectors, the can is notable for its transitional manufacturing features. As packaging technology evolved during the flat top era, Maier issued versions incorporating aluminum soft top lids on traditional steel bodies, a development that preceded the industry-wide adoption of tab-opening cans. These cans were often emblazoned with promotional banners on the face to advertise the metal composition. Variations exist across production batches, displaying differences in metallic trim colors, promotional text banners, and mandatory brewery text placements.

Maier's strategic placement of Regal Select as a competitive regional label helped the brewery maintain local shelf presence against encroaching national megabreweries. Today, the Regal Select flat top can serves as an enduring artifact of Los Angeles' industrial brewing heritage and mid-century canned beverage marketing.
