Regal Select Beer Flat Top Can

Maier Regal Select Flat Top Can

The Regal Select Beer flat top can is a prominent artifact of Southern California brewing history, produced by the Maier Brewing Company in Los Angeles. Operating from its longtime facility on Commercial Street in downtown Los Angeles, Maier stood as one of the major independent regional breweries anchoring the West Coast market throughout the mid-20th century.

Originally associated with the Regal Amber Brewing Company of San Francisco, the Regal brand transitioned to Maier following the closure of the Northern California operation. Under Maier's stewardship, Regal Select was packaged as a high-volume value brand distributed extensively through supermarkets and regional retail outlets across California and neighboring states. Maier utilized aggressive distribution and store promotions to maintain local market share amid growing competition from national shipping breweries.

The can features bold heraldic crown imagery, crisp typography, and metallic background tones emblematic of mid-century commercial canning art. Collectors recognize variations across different production runs, distinguished by differences in side-panel text layouts, can manufacturer logos, and promotional retail price badges lithographed directly onto the metal.

Representing the peak era of Los Angeles contract and regional packaging, the Regal Select flat top serves as a classic example of mid-century West Coast breweriana.
