Rheingold Extra Dry Lager Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can

Rheingold Extra Dry from Orange, NJ

The Rheingold Extra Dry Lager Beer 12 Oz Tab Top Can represents an important era of East Coast brewing history, packaged at the Rheingold facility located in Orange, New Jersey. Originally acquired by Liebmann Breweries, the Orange plant served as a primary production hub supplying the greater New York and New Jersey metropolitan markets.

Design and Identification

The can prominently showcases the traditional Rheingold crest, bold typography, and red ribbon emblem centered around the brand's famous "Extra Dry" banner. Cans filled at this facility are readily distinguished by the mandatory brewery statement noting production in Orange, New Jersey, differentiating them from runs filled at the flagship Brooklyn brewery or other regional packaging facilities.

Collectors observe various design variations from the Orange plant. Known variations include subtle differences in side-panel corporate text, mandatory statements, and top-lid metal compositions, such as steel bodies paired with aluminum tops.

Historical Context and Trivia

Rheingold was renowned for its pervasive marketing across the New York metropolitan region, notably through the Miss Rheingold pageants and sports sponsorships. Because Rheingold was a staple among regional trade workers, these cans earned a storied place in local urban history. During the construction of the original World Trade Center towers, ironworkers and laborers routinely placed empty Rheingold cans inside structural steel framework, where they remained sealed until recovery efforts decades later.

The Orange facility remained a key component of the brand's production footprint through subsequent corporate transitions before local operations finally ceased, leaving Orange-labeled cans as enduring artifacts of New Jersey's brewing past.
