Rheingold Extra Dry Lager Beer 16 Oz Zip/Tab Top Can

Iconic New York 16 Oz Rheingold Can

Produced by Rheingold Breweries (formerly Liebmann Breweries) of New York, NY, this 16-ounce pint can represents a classic piece of metropolitan brewing history. During the mid-20th century, Rheingold dominated New York, capturing more than a third of the regional market and serving as the quintessential working-class brew throughout the city.

Design and Collector Variations

The 16-ounce pint format was marketed under designations such as "Giant Half Quart" and "One Pint". Across its production history, known variations exist among surviving cans. Some variations feature the older "Liebmann Breweries Inc." corporate line, while later versions carry the "Rheingold Breweries, Inc." imprint. Minor variations also appear in side-panel text, volume phrasing (such as "16 Fl. Ounces" versus "One Pint"), and can-maker insignias, notably the American Can Company "Keglined" oval logo.

Cultural Legacy

Rheingold’s tie to New York City laborers gave the can a legendary place in local history. Decades after the construction of the World Trade Center towers, cleanup crews recovering the site following September 11, 2001, discovered numerous vintage Rheingold cans sealed inside the structural steel beams, left behind by the ironworkers who had erected the buildings. For collectors, this 16-ounce can remains a standout centerpiece of New York brewing heritage.
