Rheingold Extra Dry Lager Beer 7 Oz Tab Top Can

Rheingold Extra Dry 7 Oz Tab Top Can

This seven-ounce straight steel tab top can represents a classic small-format container for Rheingold Extra Dry Lager Beer. Sized at "CONTENTS 7 FL. OZ.", the can features the mandatory brewery line at the base reading "RHEINGOLD BREWERIES INC., NEW YORK, N.Y. & ORANGE, N.J." A distinguishing characteristic of this variation is the vertical "PUERTO RICO" text positioned along the side opposite the seam, designating its distribution and regulatory compliance for the Puerto Rican market.

Rheingold Extra Dry was introduced in the late 1930s to provide a crisp, dry lager that matched evolving American consumer tastes. Promoted under memorable slogans like "My beer is Rheingold, the dry beer," the brand grew into the best-selling beer in the New York metropolitan market during the mid-20th century. Rheingold was renowned for its pioneering marketing strategies, including the massively popular "Miss Rheingold" contest—which generated millions of public votes annually—as well as extensive sports sponsorships and advertising campaigns that celebrated New York's cultural diversity.

The brewery's origins date to 1854, when German immigrant Samuel Liebmann founded S. Liebmann's Sons Brewing Company in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. The company survived Prohibition by marketing non-alcoholic beverages and rapidly modernized after repeal. To expand capacity throughout the tri-state area, Liebmann acquired a facility in Orange, New Jersey, in 1950. Reorganized as Rheingold Breweries Inc. in 1964, the business faced intense competition from national brewing giants, ultimately shuttering its brewing operations in the late 1970s.

Seven-ounce cans are a well-regarded collecting niche within vintage breweriana, prized for their compact proportions and shelf appeal. This specific can stands out among regional collectors for its dual New York and New Jersey brewery credits and its connection to Caribbean distribution.
