Rheingold Mc Sorley's Ale Flat Top Can

Historic New York Saloon Ale Can

Produced by Liebmann Breweries, Inc. of New York, New York, the Rheingold McSorley's Ale flat top can bridges the legacy of an East Coast brewing powerhouse with Manhattan’s most historic tavern, McSorley's Old Ale House.

The McSorley's name originally gained legendary status at the East 7th Street establishment in the East Village. When Liebmann Breweries acquired the production and distribution rights from The Greater New York Brewery (formerly the Fidelio Brewery), brewing moved from Manhattan to Liebmann's sprawling industrial facility in Brooklyn. While Liebmann was best known for its massive regional sales of Rheingold Extra Dry Lager and high-profile promotions like the Miss Rheingold contest, the company continued to can McSorley's Ale under the Rheingold banner.

Because ale represented only a small portion of the brewery's overall output compared to lager, this can was produced in far lower quantities, making it an elusive prize for breweriana enthusiasts. The lithography showcases prominent McSorley's branding framed by traditional heraldic elements and the familiar Rheingold mark. Advanced collectors track subtle variations that appeared across canning runs, including minor shifts in mandatory brewery text and federal tax statements.
