Rheingold Scotch Brand Ale Flat Top Can

Rheingold Scotch Brand Ale Overview

Produced by Liebmann Breweries, Inc. of New York, New York, the Rheingold Scotch Brand Ale flat top can represents a notable specialty offering from one of the region's historic brewing powerhouses. While Liebmann was most widely celebrated for its flagship Rheingold Extra Dry lager, the brewery maintained Scotch Brand Ale as a distinctive alternative under its prominent brand umbrella.

The can's visual presentation sets itself apart from standard Rheingold releases. Instead of the familiar red-and-white lager motif, the Scotch Brand Ale label incorporates Scottish iconography, including thistle crests, rich coloration, and classic typography designed to evoke Old World brewing traditions.

Manufactured primarily by the American Can Company, the container went through multiple production runs. Consequently, collectors track several variations across the run. These differences primarily appear in the side-panel mandatory text, brewery copyright information, and patent phrasing. Variations exist with the Internal Revenue Tax Paid (IRTP) statement as well as non-IRTP releases, alongside versions featuring export tax-exempt wording.

Due to specialty ales commanding a much smaller market share compared to standard lagers, Rheingold Scotch Brand Ale cans were filled in considerably lower quantities. As a result, this can remains a sought-after piece for East Coast breweriana enthusiasts and brand-specific collectors.
