Richbrau Beer Crowntainer

Richbrau Beer Crowntainer

The Richbrau Beer Crowntainer stands as a celebrated artifact from the Home Brewing Company of Richmond, Virginia. Richmond holds a legendary place in breweriana lore as the city where canned beer was first test-marketed in 1935. Despite operating in the very birthplace of commercial beer canning, Home Brewing Company took a measured approach and waited until the 1950s to introduce its own canning operations for its flagship Richbrau label.

Manufactured by the Crown Cork & Seal Company, the Richbrau Crowntainer is immediately recognizable by its classic mid-century graphic layout. The front display showcases the traditional Richbrau heraldic crest and bold lettering, often accompanied by the slogan "Drink Richbrau Beer".

For regional breweriana collectors, this container holds historical appeal due to several key aspects:

• Background Variations: Known variations feature differences in base color tone, with examples produced in cream as well as clean white finishes.
• Regulatory Markings: Depending on the specific manufacturing run, examples show differences in mandatory legal statements and state-mandated tax stamps, with many retaining original Virginia tax lids.
• Brewery Heritage: Home Brewing Company was one of Richmond's enduring independent brewing institutions, operating from the late nineteenth century through 1969. Cans bearing the Richbrau name remain essential centerpieces for collections focusing on Mid-Atlantic and Southern brewing history.
