Rolling Rock Premium Beer 16 Oz Tab/Stay Top Can

Rolling Rock 16 Oz Latrobe Can

The Rolling Rock Premium Beer 16 oz can from the Latrobe Brewing Company of Latrobe, Pennsylvania, represents a classic piece of American breweriana. While Rolling Rock originally established its distinct brand identity through painted green returnable bottles, the 16-ounce tallboy format brought the classic Old Latrobe livery to larger single-serve packaging.

Graphic Design and Iconography

The can features the brand's recognizable kelly green finish, adorned with crisp white and blue graphics that closely mirror the company's traditional label art. Dominating the display is the signature horse head portrait framed within a circular medallion, flanked by sheaves of barley and traditional typography.

The reverse side carries the famous Rolling Rock pledge: "A pledge from the glass lined tanks of Old Latrobe... We tender this premium beer for your enjoyment, as a tribute to good living. It comes from the mountain springs to you." Directly beneath the pledge sits the legendary number "33". Over decades of collector discussions, the origins of the "33" have inspired numerous theories, from the exact word count of the original pledge text to the year 1933 marking the repeal of Prohibition, or simply a printer's tally mark mistakenly integrated into the production lithography.

Historical Context and Variations

Produced at the historic Latrobe facility before brewing operations moved following the brand's acquisition, this can represents the authentic regional era of Old Latrobe. The 16-ounce volume made it a popular option in stadiums, regional venues, and taverns.

Collectors have documented variations of this 16 oz release across different production runs. These variations include subtle shifts in mandatory text phrasing, slight repositioning of the brewery address line, and minor adjustments to typography weight.
