Royal 58 Beer Flat Top Can

Royal 58 Flat Top Beer Can

This 12-ounce flat top can from the Duluth Brewing and Malting Company represents a classic mid-century regional package from northern Minnesota. The front display presents the brand name within an arched white field bordered by metallic gold, crowned with a heraldic crest supported by two lions. The design integrates two of the brand's primary advertising taglines: the playful "MAKE A DATE WITH...." positioned directly beneath the sweeping blue script, and "Treat Yourself Royally" scripted in red across the lower gold band. The volume designation "CONTENTS 12 FLUID OUNCES" spans the upper navy border, anchored at the base by the Duluth brewery's credit line.

Royal 58 represented a late-1950s evolution of the company's long-running Royal Bohemian brand. Rebranded to modernize the product line, Royal 58 was marketed through widespread promotional campaigns encouraging consumers to "Make a date with 58". Paired with its "Treat Yourself Royally" motif, the beverage was positioned as a premium yet approachable regional staple. The label remained the flagship offering for the company throughout the late 1950s and into the 1960s.

Duluth Brewing and Malting Company was founded in 1898 in the West Duluth neighborhood of Duluth, Minnesota, by Reiner Hoch. It quickly grew into a prominent brewing presence in the western Lake Superior basin, producing recognized brands such as Moose Brand, Karlsbrau, and Rex. After halting production during Prohibition, the brewery reopened following repeal in 1933 and enjoyed sustained regional distribution for several decades. Confronted by post-war consolidation and expanding national competition, the brewery ceased operations in 1966, shortly before much of its complex was acquired and cleared for the construction of Interstate 35.

For collectors of Upper Midwest breweriana, this can stands out as an iconic artifact of Duluth's industrial brewing history. The bold mid-century typography and direct incorporation of memorable advertising slogans make it an appealing representative of post-war flat top packaging.
